Historic Jeffco: Mother Cabrini Shrine

20189 Cabrini Blvd. (off Hwy 40 between I-70 exits 256 and 259 on Lookout Mountain).

Frances Maria Xavier Cabrini founded the Institute of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Italy in 1880. After migrating to the United States initially to care for immigrants, she founded an orphanage and school in Denver in 1905. In 1912, she founded a summer camp and farm for orphans on Lookout Mountain. Donations of 800 acres were one of 67 schools, orphanages, hospitals and day care centers during her lifetime.

The Missionary Sisters built a stone dormatory house in 1914; a grotto modeled after Lourdes in France was established in 1929; a 22-foot high, white statue of Jesus was placed at the peak in 1954; a chapel, convent and gift shop was built in 1970. Cabrini was canonized in 1946 and and became known as the Patron Saint of Immigrants.

Mother Cabrini’s Shrine continues to attract 200,000 annual pilgrims (of all faiths) who visit the Holy Ground and climb 373 steps to the statue of Jesus annually. Free admission. Gift shop.
