The area grew quickly since Golden became the first Territorial Capitol of Colorado in 1861. Pioneers settlements grew rapidly to provide diverse housing that attracted a population of 530,000, including 185,000 in unincorporated areas. Jefferson County has a nationally acclaimed K-12 school district serving 185,000 children. Most residents are 30 minutes from downtown Denver and 60 minutes from worldclass ski resorts. This easy access to Colorado’s primary cultural and economic amenities has attracted one in eight Coloradoans to enjoy living with JeffCo’s natural splendors, historic treasures, recreation pleasures and geologic wonders.

 

Since 1972, citizens have gladly paid a one-half-cent sales tax that has preserved 55,000 acres of JeffCo Open Space with 135 miles of trails for hikers, bicycles, equestrians, and nature lovers. Nearly 40% of JeffCo is preserved as city, county, state, and national parks and wildlife habitat. In the central foothills, the Lariat Loop Historic & Scenic Byway enriches living in Greater Golden, the I-70 Corridor, Evergreen, and Bear Creek Canyon.

 

Residents savor unique historic places and 12,000 acres of Denver Mountain Parks preserved since the 1920s. JeffCo has excellent music, art, and drama groups, a wide variety of natural science and history museums, sacred legacies and unique enterprises.

 

JeffCo has Dinosaur Ridge, Butterfly Pavilion, Colorado Railroad Museum, Bandimere Speedway, Foothills Art Center, Heritage Square, Jefferson County Fairgrounds, Evergreen Chamber Orchestra, Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, Clear Creek Historic Park, Arvada Center for Arts and Humanities, Lakewood Cultural Center, Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, five live theatre groups, two adult and two youth chorale groups, and much more.!

The highly educated workforce produces a median household effective buying income is $51,688. In the central foothills, the average gross household income is $140,000.
